UNESCO forms official partnership with FIVA to protect our automotive heritage
In a move that acknowledges the importance of historic vehicles to our human heritage, the Director-General of UNESCO, Mrs Irina Bokova, has agreed to establish an official partnership (consultative status) between UNESCO and FIVA, the Fédération Internationale des Véhicules Anciens.
Announcing her decision, Mrs Bokova commented, “FIVA’s commitment to our industrial heritage is in line with UNESCO’s efforts in this field, and the partnership between our two organisations will undoubtedly offer new possibilities for increasing the impact of our respective actions.” Mrs Bokova went on to express her hopes that the partnership will continue to strengthen, opening up new avenues for future collaboration.
Says President of FIVA Patrick Rollet, “We are deeply honoured by UNESCO’s decision to establish this partnership with FIVA, which we believe will have very positive benefits for the future of the worldwide historic vehicle movement. At Mrs Bokova’s invitation, I hope to meet Francesco Bandarin, Assistant Director-General for Culture at UNESCO, as soon as possible in order to discover more about the opportunities and duties implied by this very welcome partnership.”
Notes to Editors
FIVA is the only global organisation of its kind aiming to encourage the safe use of historic, mechanically propelled road vehicles, while remaining equally focused on preserving and promoting the very culture of motoring. In 2016, FIVA celebrated its 50th anniversary with the FIVA World Motoring Heritage Year programme under the formal patronage of UNESCO.
